Cannon Rocks Holiday Resort in Cannon Rocks
Cannon Rocks Caravan Park or Holiday Resort, as it is officially known, is a well-kept, well-managed caravan park next to Boknes, 20km from Kenton-on-Sea, and about 30km from Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape.
The resort offers a kiosk, kids’ playground, swimming, darts, table tennis, snooker/pool, chalets, public telephones, laundry, scullery facilities, and is close to monuments and museums. Nearby attractions include hiking trails, water sports, golf, bowls, and fishing.
We enjoyed the hiking trails and the long beach walks.
The on-site shop has a variety of products that campers need, and we found them to be very reasonably priced. No exploitation because you are dependent on their shop. We value that.

Modern and convenient, although you have to hang everything inside the showers as there is no place to put your clothes and belongings.
The park has 76 wind-protected campsites with a well-constructed braai on each stand.
Neat, clean, and all working.

Things to Do near Cannon Rocks
Hiking Trails
Beach walk to the Diaz Cross.
This beach walk from Bokness Beach is about 3km and is an easy walk. At low tide, you can walk from Boesmans River Mouth on the beach for 6km to reach Diaz Cross.
The cross is located on a headland called Kwaaihoek and can also be reached with a vehicle.
The Dias Cross, also known as the Padrão de São Gregório, was erected by Bartolomeu Dia, and a replica was later erected on the site. The cross is still there, but the plaque explaining the cross has been removed, probably because it could be sold as scrap metal.
The view from the cross over the sea is worth the trip.
Cannon Trail
The Cannon Trail is a 7km trail through dune vegetation, and it starts in Cannon Rocks with the return route on the beach.
We started and ended our walk at the caravan park, which is a km or so from the official start of the trail, and that gave us about a 9km walk.
It is a medium difficulty hike.
Beach walk from Kenton-on-Sea
One can walk from Kenton-on-Sea’s Middle Beach in the direction of Boesmans River Mouth for about a kilometer depending on the tide.
This is a relaxed beach walk similar to other beaches in the area.
Beach walk from Cannon Rocks to Boknes Strand
The walk from the beach at Cannon Rocks Caravan Park to Boknes Strand beach is said to be about 2km, but measures as you walk along the beach, it adds up to about 4,5km, which makes it a 9km walk to Boknes and back.
We enjoyed this walk because it was relaxed, we saw the remains of the stranded fishing vessel the Hallelujah-20, and we had something to eat at the beach café at Boknes.
Honey-Dawn Bee Farm
At this stage, my newest pet project is honey and bees (visit my website Honeybuzz), and I made sure to find a honey farmer in the area.
I had a most pleasant visit to Honey-Dawn Bee Farm, where I met Dawn and husband Charles Friderichs. Charles started bee farming at the age of 16 and is still going strong.
During our visit, Dawn mentioned that they had Euphorbia Honey that they thought would be difficult to sell as it was quite bitter. That immediately piqued my interest, and I had a taste. I also received a bottle of the nearly black honey from Dawn.
Back at the camp, I did some research and found that the blackness of the honey could indicate a high medicinal value. This corresponded with the information from Dawn that Euphorbia honey is used in local traditional medicine.
My research indicated that Euphorbia honey had value in promoting indigestion and acid reflux. That was enough for me, who suffers from excessive stomach acid at the mere observation of a slice of white bread! I started taking a teaspoon of the honey every morning and evening, and the result was immediate. For more than 7 days, I experienced no heartburn, and after 14 days, I started having light acid and heartburn, which, surprisingly, disappeared quickly without me having to take anything for it.
Euphorbia plants, also known as spurges, contain a milky white sap (latex) that is toxic and can cause severe eye and skin irritation, potentially leading to blindness if not treated promptly. But, bees (and baboons) can consume the flowers without the latex affecting them.
Count on bees to make a poisonous plant sap into a healthy, sweet honey!
You can find Honey-Dawn Honey in most shops in the Eastern Cape and some shops outside the province.
Well sealed by Dawn, so it doesn’t spill in the caravan!
